A Message From President Lisa
|
April is The Rotarian Magazine Month.
The first Rotarian magazine was published in January 1911. This first edition was a 12-page tabloid considered the best way to distribute an essay written by Rotary founder Paul Harris. Club news and advertisements were included along with the essay and only about 2,000 copies were produced. Today The Rotarian is a 64-page full-color magazine with a monthly circulation of about 500,000. The main objective of The Rotarian is to report Rotary news and subjects directed to the interests, loyalty and involvement of its member audience.
The typical Rotarian reader is a 58-year old college graduate who is married and works full-time. Most readers (64%) live in households with incomes above $100,000.00 per year, average household income is $158,000.00. The affluence of these readers is evident – their average net worth is $1,036,000.00.
Part of Brentwood Rotary Club’s weekly meeting is a “Did You Know’ question and answer period. I believe reading The Rotarian magazine helps Rotarians understand what is happening in the world of Rotary International, so the “Did You Knows” motivate members to read the magazine so that they can answer the weekly question. There is also an opportunity to answer a follow up question for a chance to win a square on the Club’s Paul Harris Foundation board.
April Challenge: Share a copy of The Rotarian magazine, or a specific story, with a friend or family member.
Always Yours In Service ~
President Lisa Bass

There's still time to register for the April 24-26 2008 District 5160 Conference, which will increase your sense of being connected to our wonderful organization.
The conference will feature outstanding speakers and presentations, plus quality entertainment including a prospector themed Friday Night Hospitality hosted by your fellow Rotarians.
"Mumbo Gumbo" will provide entertainment at the Saturday Night Governor's Dinner. They are a group who advertises themselves as "a free-range grown-from-the-ground-up band of seven Northern California music makers whose melding of diverse styles and grooves continues to draw both booty-shakers and more sedentary, yet equally rabid, live music lovers."
Who wouldn't drive 80 miles to see that?

At the March 10 meeting we had a team composed of several club members presenting strategies for attracting new members to the club. They offered a number of ways of attracting and integrating new members:
- Warmly introduce perspective members.
- Make sure that perspective members meet as many club members, as possible. Give them an opportunity right away to feel that the club is a place where they would like to be.
- Invite visitors.
- Keep your eye open for potential members. When you find such people, be sure to give them a warm introduction.
- Preserve professional diversity.
- We want members' professions to be representative of Far East County.
- Assist in orientation
- Remind visitors of Rotary goals, history, and current topics
- Mentor
- Bring the person along. Provide a role model.
We've got a great club! Let's get the word out! Let's attract new members! Let's each do our part!

Contact Info: (925) 240-0144
Birthday: 01-23-51
Spouse Name: Bob
Kids Names: Amy & Erika (from marriage, Kevin & Mike)
Education: Whose, theirs or mine? They all graduated on our dime. Me, I couldn’t afford to go to college, I only have 2 years.
Why did you join the Rotary Club?
I believe in giving back to the community that I do business in or live in. In this case working in Brentwood meant joining here rather than where I live, Clayton. I have always served in one capacity or the other.
Your favorite way to spend free time.
Now that I am back to work it would seem that my favorite way to spend free time is housekeeping and grocery shopping. I do love the outdoors, I love to walk and ride bike. I have participated in cancer walks, like the one I am participating in April, where I will walk a marathon, but I have also walked for 3 days, 60 miles. I have also biked 1000’s of miles for various charities, from the Lung Association to raising funds for MS.
Your greatest strength.
I am fair, honest and direct. I have a good laugh too.
Your biggest accomplishment.
My biggest accomplishment in life is the rearing directly 2 and on the periphery 2 more children. They are all magnificent productive adults who are doing the same for their children. I look at them and realize what a loving and supportive family Bob and I have created and I’m humbled.
The person you are most interested in meeting and why.
John and Jane Doe down the street.
